“I paint things as I am” -Paul Hermann

The idea for a painting begins with an impulse.  Only the unconscious knows why this image is significant and must be painted.  The meaning of the image is elucidated as the painting is produced.  And the paint application and image rendering adjusts according to this meaning.

The paintings are very personally significant.  But, the aim is that they convey universal feelings that tap into the souls of others.  It is not just about the thingness of the subject matter.

The art is firmly rooted in representation.  Presently, the human form is the subject of choice.  Tomorrow it could be street scenes, still lifes, or whatever.  As long as it exemplifies a deeper truth, and calls to be painted.

Underneath all this is the simple joy of painting itself: gazing at the subject, mixing the paint, applying the paint stroke, judging the outcome, repeat.
